Competition Format & Rules

 

Competition Theme

Smart Cities. The World Health Organization states that the world's urban population is expected to double by 2050. Therefore, such an increase in population implies a detailed plan to achieve a better appraisal of resources. Our home country Singapore is seeking for good ideas to enhance sustainable growth and improve the quality of life of the citizens. 

Beforehand, participants in their teams may brainstorm and come up with ideas on their vision for a smart city.  (More examples explained here)

 

Workshop

All participating teams for the competition must attend a full-day, interactive workshop conducted on Saturday, 7 April 2018. Attendance is compulsory to take part in the Finals. 

During the workshop, all the teams will undergo business and innovation training to work on a Lean Canvas for their business idea, interacting with trainers and facilitators who will provide guidance and feedback throughout the day.

 

Mentor Matching 

All participating teams will be assigned a mentor to help them further develop and refine their business idea and pitch. Teams will be introduced to their respective mentors on Saturday, 14 April 2018 and meet for an hour's session of intensive coaching. 

 

Pitching Round & Finals

All participating teams will have to present their business plan and pitch on Saturday, 21 April 2018
Each team will be given a total of 9 minutes (including time for Q&A from the judges).

On the same day, the best 6 teams from each category will be selected to pitch in the Finals to compete for the top prizes.
The Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held right after the presentations.

Categories

  • Junior Category: Secondary School students
  • Senior Category: Centralised Institute, Junior College & ITE students
 

Eligibility

  • The Competition is open to all Secondary School, Junior College, Centralised Institute and ITE students in Singapore.
  • Winners of similar competitions are invited to participate if they meet YIC requirement and eligibility criteria.
  • Each individual member may be a part of only one team. In the event members are part of more than one team, all such teams will be disqualified.
  • Teams need to have a minimum of 2 student members and a maximum of 4 student members representing the same school..
  • Teams are expected to submit original ideas.
  • Each team is eligible to submit one idea. In the event of multiple submissions by a team the last submission made by the team will be considered for evaluation.

 

Judging Criteria

INNOVATION (20%)

Is there a unique, novel, or distinct approach, which gives it an advantage? Is it an innovative solution to solve an existing problem?

PRODUCT MARKET FIT (20%)

Does the solution address the needs of the intended user/customer? Is there a clear opportunity in the market, and is it validated?

FINANCIALS & BUSINESS MODEL (20%)

Has the team researched on resources required to develop the venture, and financial projections to further develop this?

GO TO MARKET PLAN (20%)

Are the operational plans sound and realistic? How will the team acquire customers? 

PRESENTATION & DEMO (20%)

Are materials presented concise and clear, done professionally. Is it persuasive and logical? Is there a prototype of the proposed solution?

 

Confidentiality

Participants retain all proprietary rights to their business ideas. Copies of the submissions will only be circulated for judging purposes.
Audio and video recordings of the Final Presentations will be made for SMU’s archival and competition's promotions purposes, and will not be circulated to other parties without prior consent.
Although the agencies respect the propriety rights of the participants and will endeavour to protect their rights, the organiser will not enter into any non-disclosure statements of agreements with any parties.

Disqualification

The organizer reserves the right to disqualify any teams who violate the rules, regulations or spirit of the competition.
