RAIN Programme

Overview

The Round A INvestor (RAIN) programme trains aspiring investors on the art of Pre-A to A Round funding of early stage ventures. The programme includes lectures, networking events and live cases analyses from China, Hong Kong, Israel, Singapore, Taiwan and other ASEAN countries. It is taught by award-winning business professors and top Asian venture investors.

Graduates of the programme will be invited to join the RAIN club, a community of like-minded investors who will share, evaluate and invest in deals together. As RAIN is a life-long programme tailored for busy people, participants can defer their modules and overseas trips across multiple cohorts without pressure. Alumnus of the programme will also be invited to attend future trainings and events as instructors or observers.

SMU IIE

The Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (IIE) anchors the Area of Excellence in Innovation at SMU. IIE is a practise-oriented institute that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship excellence at SMU and beyond. Our activities range from innovation & entrepreneurship events, competitions and workshops, to training programmes, study missions and internships for budding student entrepreneurs. We also run a full-fledged incubation programme that helps aspiring entrepreneurs take their ideas to market.

PAVD

The PAVD is an independent, self-funded platform with a mission to engage MBA students and graduates in the development of quality high-growth ventures in Asia. Every year, the Platform invites third-party entrepreneurs globally to provide existing projects that have good growth potential in Asia. These projects include startups and existing SMEs. MBA students from the various business schools then examine the business models and carry out limited due diligence of the projects, and prepare investment proposals for investors at zero charge.

Ivan Chan is an Asian global executive with deep experience in digital business and innovation. He is passionate about helping enterprises and start-ups to reinvent and grow their businesses, enabled by Digital. Having worked in both consumer-facing and industrial segments, across different industries, he offers unique insights and wisdom in strategizing and executing transformation programs often leading to new business models.

Ivan worked in innovation and technology strategy capacity with Accenture, McKinsey and EY. He also built, over six years, two tech start-ups within the MNC environment. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the CUHK Business School, and a frequent keynote speaker at industry conferences. Ivan holds a Master in Engineering from UBC Canada and an MBA from CUHK Business School.

Biography:
Simon Lam is a Deputy CEO and General Manager, Business Development, Hong Kong and Taiwan of Munich Re Hong Kong Branch, responsible for Munich Re both Hong Kong and Taiwan’s life and health business operation. Simon has over 17 years of experience in life insurance industry and managing actuarial operations in both Hong Kong and Malaysia as Chief Actuary. He has also been an honorary lecturer in The University of Hong Kong’s Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science since 2008, an advisor in Hang Seng Management College’s Independent Accreditation Panel to develop its Insurance and Actuarial Science Program and was a guest lecturer and industrial advisor in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman from 2009 to 2010 in Malaysia. Besides, he is a member of Actuarial Working Group in The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. Simon has served as Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK)’s council member since 2013. He is currently the President of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong.

Biography:
Vincent Law is the Executive Director of Full Success Group, he is also the Founder and Managing Director of Spark Ventures. He has an MBA degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Vincent has over 10 years of investment experience. He is responsible for a wide scope of investments including financial, real estate, start-up, PE/VC, pre-IPO and IPO. Being the third generation of the Full Success Group, Vincent has enhanced assets values and generated sustainable growth of various family funds.

He is enthusiastic about information technology and entertainment businesses. He founded Spark Venture, a VC fund focusing on early-stage investments and startups, to nurture startups with the best possible chance of success. Vincent is currently the panel judge of the largest venture investment club in Hong Kong, Pan-Asia Venture Development Platform (PAVD), its panel members manage collectively over USD500 billion of assets. He is also the member of Cyberport Investors Network, which engages worldwide investors of leading venture capitalists, angel investors and private equity funds.

Biography:
Joseph Leung is the Managing Director of Target Capital Management Limited and the Independent Non-executive Director of Sheung Moon Holdings Limited (a HK Listed Company). He graduated from the University of Hong Kong majoring at Civil Engineering and was awarded a MBA degree from the Chinese University of Hong. He is a Chartered Engineer in Civil Discipline, a qualified Financial Risk Manager and a Chartered Financial Analyst in the financial industry.

Upon his university graduation, Joseph joined AECOM and was involved in the design and project management work of a number of local infrastructure projects with budgeting over 3 billion HKD. Afterwards he proceeded to develop his finance profession by working in KGI and Target Capital Management Limited as the Managing Director, in which he was responsible for managing the investment portfolio of high-net-worth Individuals in UBS, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank. In 2016, he founded the PE Investment Arm with the Mainland Funders and has been investing in a couple of Real Estate and Pre-IPO Projects globally.

In recent years, Joseph has been studying in Harvard Business School and London Business School to further his expertise in launching new ventures and managing private equity investments.

Biography:
After graduated with a Bachelor degree in Australia in 2009, Kenneth has returned to his family office and began to manage his family business. In the meantime, he has obtained a MBA degree in CUHK.

Kenneth’s family was an early investor in China and they have been investing heavily in the power and energy industry over the past 20 years. They developed and operated a coal fired power plant in Guangdong, China for 15 years and it was then sold to a listed company in Hong Kong. During the time, they partnered with Chinese Academy of Sciences and universities in China and Japan, focused on the research and development with regard to renewable energy and waste management. The most recent investment is in Green Technology related to waste management in China.

Being the Managing Director of the company group, Kenneth has actively involved in planning, coordinating and developing new business projects. He has established two new biofuel projects in Guangdong and Inner Mongolia for the company group. Moreover, He is actively seeking for innovative technology to enhance his new business development.

Mr Lim Song Joo ( or SJ as he is fondly called ) is a seasoned and passionate veteran with niche expertise in the Market Strategy & Business Development area, helping to steer enterprises and large corporations to excel in their respective markets. He held varied and wide-ranging roles and functions in Strategy and Implementation projects in the High Tech Electronics & Supply Chain segment to find new space globally. He delivers when called upon. A “Maverick” as some would tag him but he is a good tool in the bag to bring along on that mission. Accredited at SPRING Singapore & works with Government Agencies on consultancy programs helping enterprise re-strategize and to transform.

With the added experience of co-founding & exiting a successful start-up (during the financial 2008 downturn) in the space of 18 months, He now shares his entrepreneurial experience and train other aspiring entrepreneurs as a way of contributing back to the start-up community.

Participated as an investor & as an on-board advisor across Edu-Tech, Medicare/Eldercare, Bio-Tech, Social Enterprise, Robotics, Green Engineering, Informatics & Data Analytics, Information & Productivity Technology, working closely with the start-up. Kevin is a medical doctor by first training and profession. After a few years of clinical experience in the public sector, he was an insurance medical director in the life and health insurance industry for 7 years. Upon completion of his Master of Business, he took on management and business development roles in the healthcare industry for 4 years.

Kevin has been investing in properties since 1997. With keen interest in property investment, sales and marketing as well as entrepreneurship, he joined the property industry in 2009. Besides property sales and marketing, he is growing and mentoring his team of agents.

With a passion for lifelong learning, training and mastery, Kevin is also the Strategic Partner and Master Trainer in Real Estate of a sales and entrepreneurship training company.

Biography:
Ricky has more than 30 years of successful entrepreneurial experience in setting up education centres in ASEAN and China including international collaboration with America, Australia, Canada, and United Kingdom. Ricky is the largest foreign investor for Kindergarten to Higher Education in ASEAN. He is also the first education investor to be awarded “For the Cause of the Capital City Development” Medal by Hanoi People’s Committee, Vietnam in 2017.

Under his leadership, KinderWorld was awarded with Singapore Quality Class for Business Excellence by SPRING Singapore in 2015, and National Training Award in 1990, 1992 & 1996 by Productivity and Services Board (now SPRING Singapore). From 2000 – 2005, Ricky has invested in 7 kindergartens in Shanghai, Xiamen, Tianjin and Xindu (China).

Prior to Kinderworld, Ricky served Singapore Airlines for 18 years.

Biography:
As the “second-generation” successor to KinderWorld Education Group (KEG), Stefan is no stranger to entrepreneurial ventures throughout Southeast Asia and China where the company has ventured into countries throughout the region. Being immersed in the education industry and the people involved in it, growing up has inculcated an attitude of lifelong learning in Stefan.

His passion with the Hospitality and Tourism industry spurred Stefan to pursue a Masters in Tourism Management at New York University (NYU) in New York City and a Graduate Diploma in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide in Adelaide, South Australia. After living overseas for five years away from Singapore, studying and working in the Hospitality / Tourism industry, Stefan has gained invaluable experience one receives from stepping outside his or her comfort zone. As such he enjoys to take on challenges to continually improve himself.

Stefan has returned to Singapore and taken part of KinderWorld Education Group’s plan for future developments and progress throughout China and the Southeast Asian region. Currently, he is working to evolve KinderWorld’s internal systems for the future with digitalization at the forefront and a continued emphasis on Singaporean education as the curriculum of choice for children of the future.

Biography:
Professor Chau has over 30-year extensive experience in venture development and investment in the Asian Pacific region. Currently he is the Founding Chairman of PAVD, a non-profit platform with over 60 active angels, super-angels, venture capitalists and private equity investors; a founding member of AEEA, an alliance formed by presidents, vice presidents, deans and professors from over 20 renowned universities in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore; the Chairman of ICIA (the RA of ISO17316); a Vice Chairman of the HKBio; and was the founding Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network. In addition, he is in the Board of several technology ventures and listed companies including a health care medical operator, Meilleure Health Group.

In the academic area, he is a Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship, teaching MBA, and EMBA courses covering topics of new venture creation, entrepreneurship, venture capital and private equity, Taiwan & Singapore study trip in the CUHK Business School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His PAVD cooperates with postgraduate programs of several universities to provide entrepreneurship training and help existing technology ventures/SMEs developing their own commercialization program and fundraising strategy in Asia (http://pavd.info).

Apart from contributing to the entrepreneurship education in Hong Kong, Professor Chau is also an Adjunct Professor in the MBA Program of the National University of Singapore (NUS Business School), the Curriculum Director of the Protégé Venture Capital Training Program, SMU; the External Examiner (BBA entrepreneurship) and an External Assessor for Academic Promotion of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Malaysia; and a member of the Advisory Committee (Business Degree) in the Singapore University of Social Sciences. In addition, he is a Specialist of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) and in the Editorial Board of SAGE Open Publication.

Professor Chau has obtained a bachelor degree in applied maths, a law degree, a master degree and a doctorate degree in business administration. He is also a fellow member of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the United Kingdom.

Biography:
Gerry George is a visiting professor at Imperial College London and Erasmus University. He also serves in an honorary role as International Dean of BML Munjal University, a new university near New Delhi and mentored by Imperial.

Gerry joined SMU from Imperial College where he was Deputy Dean of the Business School, Director of the Gandhi Centre, and Academic Director of the Elite Programme, which supports ambitious private companies through their next stage of growth and is sponsored by the London Stock Exchange. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Editor of the Academy of Management Journal, the flagship empirical journal in the field of management.

An award-winning researcher and teacher, Gerry has published several articles in leading scholarly journals. He was awarded a prestigious Professorial Fellowship from the UK's Economic and Social Research Council to work on resource-constrained or inclusive innovation. His work investigates business models, organisational design, and its implications for innovation and entrepreneurship. He is co-investigator in an Energy for Development collaborative project that studies the effects of rural electrification, community development and social enterprise.

Before joining Imperial, he held tenured positions at the London Business School, where he served as Faculty Director of the Institute of Technology, and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he directed the Weinert Applied Ventures in Entrepreneurship Program.

For his contribution to further education and research, Gerry was awarded Fellowship of the City & Guilds of London Institute.

Wong Poh Kam is Professor at the NUS Business School where he teaches entrepreneurship and innovation strategy with a special focus on Asia. He is also Professor (by courtesy) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Faculty of Engineering at NUS. He has published extensively in leading international refereed journals on entrepreneurship and innovation, and has consulted widely for international agencies such as the World Bank, OECD and Asian Development Bank, various government agencies in Singapore, and many private corporations in Asia.

In addition to his academic position, Prof. Wong is also concurrently the Senior Director of the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, where he spearheads the university's experiential entrepreneurship education programmes and advises the NUS Enterprise Incubator (NEI), which provides incubation space, seed funding, mentorship and network connections to early stage investors for start-ups by NUS students, professors and alumni.

He has played a pivotal role in developing a number of entrepreneurship educational programmes, among them the NUS Overseas College (NOC) programme, sending selected NUS students for internship in early stage startups in leading entrepreneurial hubs in the world; the StartUp@Singapore annual business plan competition; the DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge Asia, the largest annual social entrepreneurship competition in Asia; and LeanLaunchpad@Singapore, an adaptation of the US NSF iCorp programme to educate professors and graduate students on customer discovery/market validation for commercialising their inventions.

An entrepreneur who co-founded three companies prior to joining academia, he has been an active angel investor with investment in over a dozen high-tech start-ups in Singapore, Silicon Valley, China and India. He was the founding chairman of Business Angel Network (Southeast Asia) and is an advisor to iGlobe, a Singapore-based Venture Capital Fund. He received the Public Administration Medal (Silver) Award from the Singapore Government in 2013 for his contribution to education in Singapore, and the "Entrepreneur for the World" Award (Education Category) from the World Entrepreneurship Forum in 2015. He is a commissioner of the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS).

Biography:
Albert has been involved in the Hong Kong Financial industry since 1960s. Prior to his current position, he was the Chairman and CEO of Ping An Securities. His current position requires him to decide on investment terms and fix the investment procedures including due diligence process and risk control. His Committee manages over 80 investment executives and over Rmb 1,000 billion third party money in asset classes including direct investment and PE. Albert is also an Adjunct Professor of CUHK Business School.

Biography:
Before joining National Chiao Tung University in 2002, Dr. Huang was with Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies where he was a project leader of 3.5G cellular system development. Dr. Huang was the recipient of “Bell Labs Team Award” in 2003, “Best Paper Award” from IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference in 2004, and “Outstanding Achievement Award” from National Chiao Tung University in the years of 2007-2013. Dr. Huang is also actively served as review committee members in various Taiwan government organizations, like NSC, MOE, and MOEA for his expertise in commercialization of university researches.

Starting from 2003, Dr. Huang becomes the director of Technology Licensing Office. The office was rewarded as the best technology licensing office in consecutive five years. Besides, in 2007-2012 National Chiao Tung University has been ranked as number one in “Intellectual Property Production and Achievement” from MOE’s Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council and “Best Innovation Award” from Thomson Reuters in 2012. Since 2007, after being the director of the incubation center, the center was rewarded as the best incubation center in 2008 – 2010 and Best International Incubation center in 2012 all from Minister of Economic Affair and was ranked top 10th global incubator in UBI Index 2013. The center is global recognized and certified by NBIA Soft Landings, EBN BIC, and AABI. With all achievements, the team has been rewarded as “Best Industry Contribution” also from the Minister of Economic Affairs, Taiwan.

Dr. Huang is the editor of both ACM Wireless Networks and Recent Patents on Electrical Engineering. As now, Dr. Huang has been published more than 80 papers and has 30 US patents.

Biography:
Michael T. S. Lee is professor and former Dean of the College of Management at Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan. He is also the Past President of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools (IAJBS). He obtained his Ph.D. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. He joined the College of Management at Fu Jen Catholic University in 1994 right after his doctoral studies and has been a faculty member in FJU since then. He was promoted to full professor in 2002 and appointed as the MBA program director in 2005. He was elected as the Dean in 2009 after and is the first alumnus of FJU serving as the Dean of the College. His current efforts focuses on broadening the impact of FJU in the Greater China and Asia Pacific Region. Dr. Lee is very active in several academic societies such as AACSB, IAJBS, and Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia (ACUCA). He has also served as the editorial board and reviewer for several international renowned journals.


Allen Ma

Biography:
As a 30-year technology industry veteran, Mr. Ma holds an MBA from the University of Toronto and is a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, UK and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK. He is also holds the designation of Certified Management Accountant in Canada. Mr. Ma held numerous senior executive positions within the technology sector, including President for Asia-Pacific at British Telecom, Vice-President for Asia at the global telecom solutions sector of Motorola, executive director of Hong Kong Telecommunications (now called Cable & Wireless HKT) and Managing Director of Hong Kong Telecom CSL. Mr. Ma was the CEO of Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks before he retired in July 2016. Mr Ma is also an Adjunct Professor of CUHK Business School.

Biography:
Professor Annie Koh is Vice President for Office of Business Development, Singapore Management University, a Finance Professor (Practice), and Academic Director for two university level institutes – the Business Families Institute and International Trading Institute.

A notable conference speaker, panel moderator and commentator, Annie is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Regional Governance and, a board member of Family Firm Institute, Inc. In addition, she chairs the finance and investment committee of GovTech Singapore Board, and the Asian Bond Fund 2 Supervisory Committee of Monetary Authority of Singapore. She is appointed board member of Singapore’s Central Provident Fund since 2012 and serves on the SkillsFuture HR Sectoral Tripartite Committee, HR Certification Taskforce. Annie is also an independent director of k1 Ventures Ltd, and lead independent director of Health Management International Ltd. She also advises a number of startup firms such as JEDTrade, Stashaway and Staff-on-Demand.

A Fulbright scholar, Annie earned her PhD in International Finance from Stern School of Business, New York University (1988). Her research interests are in Family Office and Family Business, Investor Behaviour, Alternate Investments and Enterprise Risk Management. She co-authored Financial Management: Theory and Practice, An Asia Edition (2014), and Financing Internationalisation – Growth Strategies for Successful Companies (2004), and author of a number of Asian family business cases and survey reports.

Prof Koh is awarded the Singapore Public Administration Medal, Bronze (2010), Silver (2016), and the Adult Education Prism Award (2017) for her contributions to the education and public sectors.

Orion Wang was a founding partner of Rightway Technology Venture Investment Co., Ltd., The company and the venture capital fund managed by the company "R & D in Shenzhen, technology in the world, market in China" as the investment philosophy, the management of venture capital funds in its partners to find Chinese and foreign technology integration projects.

Orion Wang is Dean of Modern Business Development Research Center (technology commercialization), deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of Germany and China Industry 4.0 Alliance, president of Chenxing Longzhi investment management Co., Ltd. She graduated from Nanjing University of Technology, and EMBA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has worked in the media, fast moving consumer goods, luxury goods, investment industry, and has more than 10 years of top 500 foreign-funded enterprises (Pepsi) and Jiangsu well-known enterprises (Baoqing Yinlou chain) of senior management experience. She has served as director of marketing operations, general manager of marketing, and general manager. In recent years, she has focused on the domestic traditional industry upgrading consultation, the technology integra- tion research and project between China and foreign countries, the planning of government-production-uni- versity-research project suitable for the positioning of Shenzhen technology industry platform. Shenzhen's one of ten major manufacturing innovation center, "Sino-German manufacturing innovation center" has been completed, this project is one of the most important projects in Shenzhen's top ten action plans.

 


Roy Zheng

Biography:
Roy Zheng founded the "Victory Foundation" in 2000, has devoted more than 30 years in employment of disabled. Although being in non-profit organization, he sticks to the concept of non-fundraising and believes that it is only through the successful business model and effective operation and management that the employment of disabled could be sustained.

At present, Victory has incorporated a number of business partners such as CNPC, China Trust and the Family Mart to create diversified and innovative jobs for disabled people . The list of jobs includes gas stations, data entry, convenience stores, web design, hand-made glass workshop and restaurants. Victory Foundation has been winning the first prize in the Taipei Sheltered Workshop for many consecutive years. They have employed more than 200 disabled workers, covering 8 different types of disabilities, making them one of the largest employers in Taipei for the disabled.

Since 2010, he has also served as Executive Director of Ruo Shui International. Ruo Shui takes "solving the employment problem of disabled" as the direction of social enterprise development, it will continue to support the public welfare value of employment of the disabled by means of enterprise management, focus on finding cloud opportunities and discover employment opportunities for the disabled. So it can effectively integrate the resources of non-profit organizations and the government to develop a sustainable Eco-system for the employ- ment of disabled and create a model of social enterprise that combines business and public welfare.

Ivan Chan is an Asian global executive with deep experience in building digital business and innovating new business models. Currently he is Managing Director with Accenture Digital, leading Digital Transformation and Innovation in Greater China. Ivan is part of the global leadership of Industry X.0, a practice helping clients to reinvent their businesses, enabled by Digital. Having worked in both consumer-facing and industrial segments, across different industries, he offers clients unique insights and wisdom in strategizing and executing transformation programs often leading to new business models.

Prior to joining Accenture, Ivan was in similar technology strategy capacity with McKinsey and Ernst & Young. He had also incubated, over 6 years, two technology start-ups within MNC environment. Ivan was a frequent speaker at major Digital conferences such as Mobile World Congress and Computer Society; he is a guest lecturer at the Chinese University MBA school on the topic of Digital Transformation. Ivan had a Master of Engineering from UBC Canada, and a MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Biography:
Ricky has more than 30 years of successful entrepreneurial experience in setting up education centres in ASEAN and China including international collaboration with America, Australia, Canada, and United Kingdom. Ricky is the largest foreign investor for Kindergarten to Higher Education in ASEAN. He is also the first education investor to be awarded “For the Cause of the Capital City Development” Medal by Hanoi People’s Committee, Vietnam in 2017.

Under his leadership, KinderWorld was awarded with Singapore Quality Class for Business Excellence by SPRING Singapore in 2015, and National Training Award in 1990, 1992 & 1996 by Productivity and Services Board (now SPRING Singapore). From 2000 – 2005, Ricky has invested in 7 kindergartens in Shanghai, Xiamen, Tianjin and Xindu (China).

Prior to Kinderworld, Ricky served Singapore Airlines for 18 years.

Grace Ma currently holds the role of Deputy General Manager at ALBEN Investments, an Asian company headquartered in Shanghai that specializes in providing customized financial solutions in ag space. Prior to ALBEN, Grace served as Director of Communications & External relations in Cargill China responsible for the development and execution of strategic partnership programs with Chinese policy-makers on food security, food safety, sustainable supply chain. In 2013, Grace co-founded Verdura, a Shanghai company that produces high-end microgreen and herbs where she helps to provide sustainable income to local farmers and enrich the local community. Grace Ma also serves as Board Member of Enjoydesk, an office space version of Airbnb.

In 2017, Grace founded Gralex Corporation, an investment holding company for her venture adventure. As an independent investor, Grace focuses on finding the disruptive technology companies that can change the traditional business models and create new value for users.

Grace Ma was elected Member of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) of Jing’an District, Shanghai in 2016 representing economic category.

Grace Ma graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2001 with dual degrees in English and Business Administration.

Alex has managed the investment activities for the Foundation since 2016. The Foundation seeks to grow its endowment through ownership of Australian commercial real estate, with a focus on hospitality and retail assets.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Alex worked in Taiko Management and the Cargill Group. His career has been in strategy consulting and corporate finance. His primary experience is in advising companies on various commodity related asset transactions as well as mergers and acquisitions. In addition, he has had experience in agri commodity trading and risk management in Singapore and China. Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from Adelaide University and an MBA from China Europe International Business School.

Biography:
James has more than 15 years of experience across various fields like private banking, private equity and investment banking in institutions like DBS Bank, OCBC Bank, Oppenheimer Investments and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services. In addition, James also ran a family office which invested in more than 9 investments spanning from healthcare, consumer goods, aged care, engineering, renewable energy and childcare.

James currently is the Chief Investment Officer of YCH Group, where he originates and executes cross boarder acquisitions for the group. In addition to M&A, James actively spearheads YCH’s corporate finance initiatives across the group’s real estate assets and supply chain financing solutions.

He is also a Partner of Supply Chain Angels, YCH’s SG20m Corporate Venture Capital vehicle. Co-invested by the National Research Foundation and SG Innovate. He is also a mentor for PolyFinTech100.

Will Ongkowidjaja is a venture capitalist with top-tier investment banking and management consulting background. Prior to co-founding Alpha JWC Ventures, Will was a Director at UBS Investment Bank in Indonesia and a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Indonesia and Booz Allen Hamilton in Australia. Will has extensive experience in advising business owners and senior management on over USD 5 billion of IPOs, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and bond issuances.

In addition, in his capacity as a management consultant, Will has broad experience in advising state-owned enterprises, corporates, and private equity funds on the following types of consulting engagements: operations improvement, portfolio & growth strategy and M&A due diligence.

Will holds an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management, and he received the following licenses in Indonesia: (1) Underwriter license and (2) Broker Dealer license.

Will enjoys writing, and he is a regular columnist for Forbes Indonesia magazine where he primarily writes about topics on Technology sector and Investments. Will is also passionate about education and its impact; hence he is on Singapore Management University’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship Curriculum Review Committee.

Paul is an accomplished entrepreneur who has successfully co-founded and grown six companies to profitability across a variety of industries, exiting twice. His first exit was with Indio, an integrated marketing communications company that was acquired by Dentsu. His second was with Vertex Solutions, a customer service and technical support company granted Pioneer Status by the Philippine’s Board of Investments that was acquired by Alorica. Paul is also a Partner at Siemer Ventures, a cross border, early stage fund and leads its investments from Singapore. He has led the investment into and/or sits on the Board of Directors of AppAddictive, Ayannah, Frenzoo and TradeSparq.

Prior to the partnership with Siemer Ventures, Paul was Managing Partner at Tholons Capital, a seed stage investment firm that focused on IT-enabled service companies that leveraged the two leading outsourcing destinations in the world, India and the Philippines. He was also President for Asia for Tholons, a leading boutique advisory firm focused on the globalization and outsourcing of services. Tholons works with buyers, suppliers, investors and government and trade organizations around the world that seek to benefit from the globalization and outsourcing of technology-enabled services.

Paul started his career in Brand Management with Procter & Gamble where he led one of its flagship brands to achieve record levels in revenue, share and profit as well as image ratings. He graduated with a BS in Management Engineering from the Ateneo de Manila University with a Joint Minor in International Management from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is also a member of the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) and is part of its Asia Bridge Forum (ABF).

Tan Yinglan founded Insignia Venture Partners in 2017, an early stage technology venture fund focusing on Southeast Asia with over US$120 million under management. Prior to founding Insignia Venture Partners, Yinglan was Sequoia Capital’s first hire and Venture Partner in Southeast Asia. He sourced multiple investment opportunities for Sequoia including Tokopedia, Go-jek, Traveloka, Carousell, Appier (where he represented Sequoia on the board), Dailyhotel, Pinkoi and 99.co. Yinglan had also been a member of the elite Singapore Administrative Service, where he served in a variety of positions in the Prime Minister’s Office (where he was part of a team that managed a S$360 million fund for innovation and enterprise), Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Defence. Yinglan was also the founding Director of 3i Venturelab China, a joint-venture between private equity firm 3i (LSE:III) and INSEAD.

Yinglan also serves on the Singapore Government’s Pro Enterprise Panel and the Committee on the Future Economy's Sub-Committee on Future Corporate Capabilities and Innovation. Yinglan is an Adjunct Associate Professor at National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. He is also a Strategic Research Innovation Fund Investment Committee Member at Nanyang Technology University.

Yinglan was educated at Harvard, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon.

With degrees from LSE, Yale and CFA, CAIA professional designations, Rebekah has more than 18 years of investing experience. Rebekah started her career with the EDB Singapore, both in Singapore and New York. She then spent more than 6 years with a multi-billion single family office in New York, investing across asset classes. Rebekah then joined J.P. Morgan Asset Management where they relocated her back to Singapore. After J.P. Morgan, Rebekah joined CDPQ, Canada’s 2nd largest pension plan when it first opened its Asia Pacific HQ in Singapore, covering investments throughout Asia. With her education and experience, Rebekah has a deep understanding of global financial markets and businesses, with a proven asset allocation, portfolio management and investing track record.

Fully bilingual in English, Mandarin and with working French, Rebekah also invests and advises several start-ups, growth companies, angel networks and family offices. She actively contributes in various non-profits as a nominated committee member, for e.g. Singapore Institute of Directors (SID), Yale Alumni Association etc.

The RAIN programme is a lifelong training programme tailored for busy people. We allow our students to defer their modules and overseas trips across multiple cohorts without any time pressure. The student will be issued the certificate of participation after he completes all the modules.

S$16,050 (Inclusive of 7% Goods and Services Tax)
Financial grants are available for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents.*

Registration

Registration will typically close 2 weeks before the programme commencement date. A place in the programme will be reserved for you upon receipt of your successful registration. The reservation of the seat is based on trust and the personal responsibility of the applicant or company who had registered for the programme. Any change to the registration status, such as substitution, deferment or cancellation, should be sent to SMU-IIE as soon as practicable, in writing (email: iie@smu.edu.sg).

 

Substitution, Deferment, and Cancelation Policy

As SMU-IIE’s programmes are regularly fully subscribed, late notice deferment or cancellation often result in financial loss for the centre, as we are unable to remarket the seat that had been previously reserved, to another interested applicant / company on short notice. As for substitution, such changes will entail additional administrative tasks. Accordingly, the following policies and charges will apply in the aforesaid circumstances, except for compassionate or medical grounds:

Substitution (subject to approval)

  • 2 weeks and prior to the programme commencement – no charge
  • Within 2 weeks prior to the programme commence – 5% of programme fee

Cancelation Policy 

All cancellations must be received in writing. The following charges apply for cancellations received:

  • More than 30days prior to the programme commencement: no charge
  • 15-30 days prior to the programme commencement: 30% of program fee
  • 7- 14 days prior to the programme commencement: 60% of program fee
  • Less than 7days prior to the programme commencement: 100% of program fee

Deferment

Withdrawal

There will strictly be no refund of programme fees if notification for withdrawal is received after programme commencement.
