Tackling Malware Threats on Android Environment

Overview

The prevalence of sophisticated malware threats has risen significantly, posing serious risks to computer systems by inflicting substantial damage, compromising sensitive data, and resulting in financial losses. Recent incidents, such as hackers targeting  Android users with a trojanised version of the Telegram app , and Google suspending an  e-commerce app Pinduoduo over malware concerns, highlight the urgency for robust mobile security solutions. It is noteworthy that Android devices, constituting approximately 70% of the global market share , are particularly vulnerable, emphasizing the critical importance of effective security measures in this widely utilised environment.

Our Innovation Approach

Years of dedicated research in Mobile Systems Security and Cloud Security within the realm of Cybersecurity have yielded two innovative technologies, constituting a dual-pronged approach to combatting malware threats.

The Side Channel Monitoring tool empowers end-users, providing them with the ability to discern whether installed apps on their devices compromise data security. It identifies unauthorised access to accessories such as the camera and microphone, as well as clandestine external communication when the device is not in active use.

On the other hand, the Fine Grain Analysis tool is designed to empower institutions, offering a robust mechanism for certifying apps as safe for use. As institutions increasingly deploy apps for engagement with both internal and external users, a common scenario involves the development of these apps by third-party developers. This introduces the potential for vulnerabilities to seep in through various library & other sources utilised in app development. Recognising that many cybercriminals exploit loopholes at the instructional & execution level, where traditional malware detection solutions often fall short. Fine Grain Analysis tool conducts detailed instructional & execution level analyses of Android applications to detect malicious code hidden on App in both static and while in use mode.

Our ongoing deep research efforts are committed to expanding our portfolio of technologies in this space, ensuring that we stay ahead of evolving threats from malicious actors.

Benefits

  • Detect hidden threats in apps through both static and instructional/execution level analysis.

  • Precisely analyse mobile apps, ensuring compliance with safety standards for certification.

  • Strengthen security checks for Android apps prior to deployment.

  • Identify vulnerable apps installed on your Android device.

  • Embed this technology in the development process of mobile phones.

  • Configure the Side Channel Monitoring tool on popular phone models.

  • Fine Grain Tool available on Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro with Android 12/13. Future versions planned to operate as a desktop simulator, eliminating the need for a physical mobile device for certifying.

Applications

  • Mobile malware security application.

  • Institutions can employ the tool to verify the absence of malware in mobile apps developed by third-party contractors.

  • Mobile app developers can utilize the tool to verify the absence of malicious code in libraries before integrating them into their apps.

  • Certification tool to verify adherence to safe app standards.
